Shute Park's Intercambio adds another weekly group
Intercambio is the Spanish word for exchange. At Hillsboro's Shute Park Branch, Intercambio is a Spanish/English conversation group. This bilingual conversation group is free and meets every Saturday at 10:30 AM.
It's been such a success, Shute Park is adding a second Intercambio in September, meeting on Wednesday nights at 6:30 pm.
Both Intercambios are open to all learners of English and Spanish. Learn new vocabulary, enhance your speaking skills, and meet new people!
The Shute Park Branch is located at 775 SE Tenth Avenue, in Shute Park, just south of the pool.

Search the catalog from the WCCLS front page

Did you notice anything different on the WCCLS website today? If you said, there's a search box for the library catalog right up top on the front page, you'd be correct.
That's right. You can now do what library staff call a keyword search, right from the front page.
Try it with the important words from a title, or an author's name, or a person, place or thing, when you're looking to see if we have a physical item you'd like to borrow.
We hope you like it!

8/26: Mastodons of Washington County at Tualatin
Tualatin Public Library has a mastodon on display.
Yes, a mastodon. Pleistocene megafauna. Extinct for more than 10,000 years. It's at the Tualatin Public Library.
And on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at 7 PM, Dr. John George (who dug up the fossil while he was a student at PSU), and Dan Gilmour (current graduate student writing his thesis on the mastodon fossil) will be speaking on Tu Tu Tuala, the 5-ton female Tualatin Mastodon.
It's fitting that the presentation happen at the library, as the fossil was excavated right across the street in what is now a parking lot.
Come and learn more. Tualatin Public Library is located at 18878 SW Martinazzi Ave, just north of Nyberg Road.

8/23: Holocaust survivor speaks at Hillsboro
At age 16, Helen Handler was deported, with her family, from Hungary and deposited on the Auschwitz-Birkenau train platform. They were then separated. She never saw them again, never to learn how they died or where they were buried.
Handler survived Auschwitz, then another concentration camp, and in the last days of WWII, a death march, and being closed with one thousand others in a huge barn. Only 30 survived.
Over the next five years, she went from country to country and hospital to hospital. For two years she couldn't even sit up. Eventually, she ended up in United States.
The Hillsboro Main Library is located at 2850 NE Brookwood Parkway, just east of the Hillsboro Airport, and just south of Dawson Creek Drive.

We thank you in advance for your patience and consideration.
