Looking for something to do this weekend? Why not browse the Friends of the Hillsboro Library's fall book sale? It starts Friday, October 28th, and runs to Sunday, November 6th. The sale is held in the meeting room at the Hillsboro Main Library and is open during library hours. 

You'll find kids books, cookbooks, mysteries, fiction, nonfiction, reference books, large print, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, and even videos and LPs. There are more than 50,000 items to choose from, so you're likely to find something you'll enjoy.

Improvements made to the OverDrive Media Console mobile app

Do you use the OverDrive Media Console app to download epub ebooks and mp3 audiobooks directly to your mobile device from Library2Go? You will be pleased to hear that OverDrive has made some improvements to the process. 

You can now:

• Choose your loan period when you check out on your mobile device
• Easily perform advanced searches on your mobile device
• Search within your results to get more easily to what you want

We have updated the guide to using the OverDrive Media Console app on your iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch).

iOS 5 upgrade and Library2Go

Do you transfer wma audiobook files from your Windows PC to your iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)? If so, please be aware that the OverDrive Media Console software is not compatible with iOS 5 and the transfer process will no longer work if you upgrade your device to iOS 5. 

OverDrive, the vendor that provides OverDrive Media Console, is aware of the issue and working on a fix. However, we do not have an estimate from them as to when an updated version of the software will be available.

Please note that downloading epub ebooks and mp3 audiobooks directly to your iOS device via the OverDrive Media Console app still continues to function normally with iOS 5.

Improved Library2Go help information available

Visit wccls.org/library2go to find an updated page with improved information on using the Library2Go service to download ebooks, audiobooks and videos. 

The page has guides for the devices most frequently used with Library2Go - iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch, Kindle, and Nook.

We will be adding more guides and more troubleshooting information as time goes on. We hope that you find it a helpful resource if you're getting started with Library2Go, or if you have a question. If you have questions or feedback about the page, let us know!

Portland Trail Blazers Summer Reading reward update

The children who participated in Summer Reading 2011 and met their reading goals received a certificate for one free ticket to a select Portland Trail Blazers home game. Due to an unexpected labor dispute between the NBA and its Players’ Union, the exact start date of the NBA season has become uncertain and the Summer Reading schedule for the Portland Trail Blazers has not yet been announced.

Once games resume, here are the steps (pdf) to find out which games will be on the Summer Reading schedule. Remember, these instructions will not apply until the games resume.

Family Resource Fair at the Beaverton City Library

Are you looking for a one-stop place to find out about family-friendly, low-cost/no-cost programs for your children? Then mark your calendar for Beaverton City Library’s Family Resource Fair on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the Beaverton City Library (map).

Coordinated by Beaverton City Library’s Children’s Services Division, the Family Resource Fair is a free, community event, where families can learn about local programs and services for children, infants through upper elementary grades. Exhibits from more than 30 local organizations will be available that highlight children’s dental and vision care, educational support for kids of all abilities, mom’s groups, fine arts, mentoring, and more. Children will also have a chance to participate in fun activities and games. In addition, children ages 3-5 years old, not already tested in other programs, can receive free vision screening. Families visiting at least 15 tables will be entered into a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses.

Please note the Beaverton Farmer’s Market runs from from 8:00 am – 1:30 pm. You may need to arrive earlier than usual to find parking.

"Speed Dating" for Solar & Clean Energy Oct. 13th

Come and explore solar as well as other clean energy options at a friendly, fun roundtable event at Hillsboro Main Library.

Hillsboro is offering a solar incentive program to encourage residents and businesses to "go solar." The Hillsboro Solar Advantage program, in collaboration with SolarWorld USA and Tanasbourne-based LiveLight Energy, provides an opportunity to purchase and install a SolarWorld rooftop solar system with packaged incentives. Participants who sign up by October 31st can take advantage of 2011 federal and state tax credits. State tax credits will be lower in 2012.

Hillsboro Main Library is hosting a workshop on Thursday, October 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. Come and explore solar as well as other clean energy options at this friendly, fun roundtable event. Meet with table hosts and collect handouts about all your energy options.

There are other opportunities to learn about solar energy and attend workshops. Check the schedule at the Hillsboro Solar Advantage web site.

Used book sale at the Tigard Library this weekend

The Friends of the Tigard Library are hosting a used book sale in the Community Room of the Tigard Public Library. 

Browse and buy used books, CDs and DVDs over two days. The sale is held on Friday, October 7th, from 9 am to 5 pm, and Saturday, October 8th, from 9 am to 3 pm.

A Highland Fling at the Cedar Mill Library Oct. 7th

A Highland Fling on the Mezzanine

To mark Oregon Days of Culture, the Cedar Mill Library is proud to present a special Music on the Mezzanine featuring highland pipes played by Matt Rucker, Cedar Mill's own resident bagpiper. The program begins at 7 pm on Friday, October 7.

Matt began learning to play the Great Highland Bagpipes in the spring of 2006. His instructor is Mark Tomasetti, Pipe Major of the Portland Metro Pipe Band.  Matt played for two years as Pipe Sergeant of the Portland Metro Youth Pipe Band and currently plays as a member of the Portland Metro Pipe Band. Last summer Matt placed second in the Grand Aggregate for Grade Two Solo Competition in the Pacific Northwest. Next August, Matt will travel to Glasgow Green, Scotland to compete in The World Pipe Band Championships.

As the Great Highland Bagpipe tends to be a bit overpowering for a library setting, Matt will be playing a shuttle pipe made by John Walsh Bagpipes. For variety, he will also play a set using a penny whistle.

The 4th annual Oregon Days of Culture takes place between October 1 and 8. It's the 9th anniversary of Oregon's unique and powerful cultural tax credit. Presented by the Oregon Cultural Trust, Oregon Days of Culture celebrates the vibrancy of Oregon heritage, humanities and arts. The eight-day celebration showcases everyday culture in every Oregon community. Find all event listings at oregondaysofculture.org and while you're there (between October 1-31), submit your photo of Oregon culture for the chance to win $1,000 in cash, fancy cameras, and other swell prizes.
