Unplug the Christmas machine at the Cedar Mill Library

Unplug the Christmas Machine! Participate in a free workshop to reinvent a joyful, less commercial Christmas on Sunday, December 4th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm in the Cedar Mill Library's Community Room.

Learn how to make this the warmest and most enchanting Christmas ever! Based on the work of Jo Robinson and Jean Coppock Staeheli, we'll share holiday traditions, complete worksheets, and brainstorm new approaches, helped along with laughter, fun and chocolate! The workshop is facilitated by Becky Lovejoy, a Cedar Mill staff member.

What did you most enjoy about the holidays? Bring back the magic by rethinking old habits, simplifying, creating new traditions, and balancing the material world with the spiritual one. Take the Holiday Pledge, laugh about the Ten Hidden Gift-Giving Rules, brainstorm how to find or make gifts without breaking the budget, and more.

To reserve your space or for more information, e-mail us at seabrookxmas@comcast.net. Can't make it? Request an electronic copy of the "Unplug the Christmas Machine" handbook or check out the books on simplifying Christmas in the WCCLS catalog.

Kindle books by Penguin publishers in Library2Go

We were just made aware this afternoon that all ebooks published by Penguin are no longer available for Kindle lending in Library2Go.

Penguin ebooks are still available in EPUB and PDF formats - only Kindle availability has been pulled by the publisher.

Penguin says they pulled Kindle availability due to security concerns. From their statement - "[D]ue to new concerns about the security of our digital editions, we find it necessary to delay the availability of our new titles in the digital format while we resolve these concerns with our business partners."

If you had Penguin books in Kindle format on hold in Library2Go, they are no longer available. We apologize for the inconvenience this might cause. At this time we do not know if or when Penguin will restore access to Kindle lending for their titles, but we will keep you informed.

Here is how to tell who the publisher of a book is:

1. Click on the title of the book for its full record

2. Look for the publisher

Award-Winning Classical Guitarist Peter Fletcher Performs Music From Four Centuries

Award-Winning Classical Guitarist Peter Fletcher Performs Music From Four Centuries

Monday, November 7, 7:00pm
Tualatin Public Library

Many musicians dream of a chance to perform at Carnegie Hall. Classical guitarist Peter Fletcher has played at the historic concert venue in New York four times. His most recent show, in March 2010, was sold out. Fletcher will take a different stage when he performs the music of Bach and many other composers at the Tualatin Public Library at 7 p.m. November 7. Fletcher said he does not approach a library performance any differently from a performance in a prestigious music hall. Audiences will leave his performances with a similar sample of his musical talents, but might experience more.  Peter does the same performance he would do at Carnegie Hall as he would in a library.

Fletcher began his illustrious career playing on a baritone ukulele at the age of six, but that wasn't good enough for the music loving first grader. By the time he was seven, he was taking classical guitar lessons from John Sutherland, the author of "Everybody's Classical Guitar." Peter started with classical guitar because Sutherland said it would make a good base no matter what style of guitar he wanted to play. Peter loved it and decided to stay with it.

The concert will feature selections from Fletcher's 2008 CD release on Tower Hill Records: Music of the Baroque. Other repertoire will include Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring from Cantata No. 147 as well as the Chaconne in D minor by J. S. Bach; Usher-Waltz, an unusual and intense piece by Russian guitarist and composer Nikita Koshkin; two works from Maurice Ravel's exquisite Mother Goose Suite; Francisco Tarrega's ever popular Recuerdos de la Alhambra; two exciting crowd pleasers by Spanish composer Joaquin Turina; Grieg's Chanson de Solveig from Peer Gynt; and music of Praetorius, Ponce and Reusner.

The program will culminate with Koyunbaba, by composer/guitarist Carlo Domeniconi. This is one of the most unique and exciting works in the classical guitar repertoire. Proclaimed Peter Burwasser of Fanfare Magazine: "Fletcher plays it all with a gracious virtuosity that makes for a very pleasing hour plus of unaffected musical poetry."
