Life After War: Photography and Oral Histories of Coming Home at Tualatin Library

When does a war end? Does it ever? Many returning soldiers bring wars back with them, and these wars can reach beyond the battlefield, infiltrating the very thing that defines comfort and safety: home.

Join the Tualatin Library and photographer Jim Lommasson Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. for a free conversation about Life After War.  Lommasson has collected oral histories from returning soldiers and documented their struggles at home. In this conversation, participants will consider the wars at home faced not only by returning veterans, but also by communities at large.

Jim Lommasson is a freelance photographer who received the Dorothea Lange–Paul Taylor Prize for his first book, Shadow Boxers: Sweat, Sacrifice & the Will to Survive in American Boxing Gyms. His second book is Pentimento: Portland’s Lost and Found Carousel. Lommasson is currently working on a book and traveling exhibition about American veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars called Exit Wounds: Soldiers' Stories—Life after Iraq and Afghanistan.

We have a winner for the 2014 Teen Summer Reading Art Contest!

The Washington County Cooperative Library Services (WCCLS) is proud to announce the winner of its 2014 Teen Summer Reading Art Contest: Jacqueline Brown!

A ninth-grader at Sunset High School, Jacqueline has been awarded top honors for her unique and electrifying design which depicts a reader poring over the wondrous contents of a book.  Her design expertly captures this year’s Teen Summer Reading theme: Spark a Reaction. 

Jacqueline will receive a $150 gift certificate for Powell’s Book and her art will appear on all countywide Teen Summer Reading publicity this summer.

This is the fifth consecutive year that WCCLS has encouraged teens to capture the spirit of Summer Reading through their creative art.  35 pieces were submitted at the public libraries in Washington County during the months of January and February.  On March 11th, a panel of teen librarians met to review feedback collected from local Teen Library Councils and select the winning piece.

2nd Place and Honorable Mention winners were also awarded.  These individuals will each receive a gift card for Dick Blick Art Materials.

The Summer Reading Program inspires kids with a sense of wonder and helps to promote good learning habits.

Summer Reading in Washington County will officially begin on June 1st.  Teens can sign up at their local public library to earn prizes for reading, including tickets to Portland Thorn and Trail Blazers games, a round of miniature golf at Bullwinkles Family Fun Center and a deep discount to Oaks Amusement Park.  For more details, please visit www.wccls.org/tsrp in early May.
