Use the Tigard Library? Fill in their annual survey

The Tigard Public Library is doing their annual survey.

You can fill it out online throughout February, or by paper in the library from Sunday, January 31, to Saturday, February 13.

Anyone can take the survey whether or not they have used the library. Last year, 2,781 people responded.

This year the survey will ask people to rate customer service and to suggest programs or services they would like the library to provide.  It will also ask about e-books and e-audiobooks, as well as how people learn about library events and services.

The Tigard Public Library has conducted annual surveys for more than 20 years.  Past survey responses have influenced several changes in library operations such as re-opening on Thursdays, allowing people to pick up their own reserved books, adding more programs for children and families on weekends, and offering a wider variety of computer classes.

Tigard Library Seeks Local History Volunteers

The Tigard Library will hold an open house to acquaint people with its local history room on Monday, January 25, at 6 p.m. The library is looking for volunteers who will assist people in using its local history resources. Volunteers welcome library users to the room and answer basic questions about Tigard history and materials available at the library.

The local history room is currently open to the public on Mondays from 2 to 4 p.m. and by appointment.  Additional volunteers would allow the library to open the local history room more often.

The library’s local history librarian will train volunteers to become familiar with the collection and provide an overview of local history projects and resources. Volunteers will provide basic assistance to the public and convey more complex inquiries to history librarians for further research.

For more information about the open house or to RSVP, please call 503-718-2517.

Rainwater brings his musical background in blues and bluegrass, while Van Kleef offers her stunning soulful vocals and background in rock and folk.

Award-winning books for kids and teens announced

2016 Newbery Medal Winner
Earlier today, the American Library Association announced award winners for books for children and teens in a variety of categories.

Some of the most familiar awards might be the Caldecott Medal and the Newbery Medal.

But the awards cover a wide range, from the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award ("for the most distinguished beginning reader book"), to the Pura Belpré Awards ("honoring a Latino writer and illustrator whose children’s books best portray, affirm and celebrate the Latino cultural experience").

2016 Caldecott Medal Winner
See the full list of award winners from the ALA here.

You can also browse a list of award-winning books within the WCCLS catalog. You're sure to find some excellent titles to share with your young readers.

Also, in your hunt for good kids titles, don't overlook the book lists provided on the WCCLS for Kids page at wccls.org/kids. Happy reading!
