A small library in Washington County is getting a little bigger thanks to community support and the last countywide library levy. Nested in the center of one of the region’s most rapidly-growing neighborhoods, Bethany Library receives more than 200,000 patron visits each year and lends out around 750,000 items. At just 4,000 square feet the branch has been undersized from its opening in 2007. “We have not found another library that delivers as much service from such a tiny footprint.” Says Cedar Mill and Bethany Community Libraries Executive Director, Peter Leonard.

Located outside city boundaries, the library is not eligible to receive public funding for a building project. So its governing nonprofit, Cedar Mill Community Libraries Association, has been leasing space from supportive private developers in order to provide library services in the expanding community. Central Bethany Development is holding space for a larger library in the planned Bethany Plaza, but construction is at least a few years out.

In the meantime the library is opening an annex that it will use for programs including the 2 dozen that it already offers children and their parents every month. The additional space will accommodate new programs for babies, adults and teens.
The library also plans to allow local nonprofit groups to use the space for meetings beginning next year.

The Annex is located down the street from Bethany Library between the Subway Sandwich shop and Salon Desire in Bethany Village. Find scheduled programs at
